‘On the Trail of the Lake Michigan Mothman’ Documentary Releases
New Small Town Monsters film sheds light on a rash of modern-day Mothman sightings

Small Town Monsters, an award-winning production company, is dedicated to documenting Small Town America’s strange tales and occurrences before they’re lost to time. And in their latest documentary, they have continued this mission with startling and compelling results. This time, they’re heading to the midwest to investigate a rash of sightings from 2017 of a winged creature that spread around Chicago, Indiana, and Michigan. Could it be the legendary Mothman?
I sat down with Seth Breedlove, founder of Small Town Monsters and director of On the Trail of the Michigan Mothman, to get the inside scoop on the recently released documentary, including what happened during the process of the investigation and filming, what it was like working with local researchers and investigators, Tobias and Emily Wayland, and what comes next on the trail for Small Town Monsters.
Ryan Sprague (RS) What do you want viewers to really take away from the film?
Seth Breedlove (SB) I think the ultimate point of the movie is that there are reasons for looking into the paranormal beyond simply the fun of chasing monsters. The witnesses we interviewed were genuinely looking for answers to what they’d seen. I think maybe the thing I’d like to see an audience take away from the movie is that there is good that can come from looking into this stuff. Offering answers and occasionally closure. The tagline for the movie is Investigate the Impossible for a reason.
RS: What was your favorite part of filming?
SB: Exploring the various locations. Downtown Chicago and the suburbs and Indiana Dunes are all very unique, interesting places that I was glad to have the opportunity to visit.
